Farms that haven't posted 2026 dates yet

  • Bradley Tree Farm, Vienna: 1628 Sodom-Hutchings Road NE, 330-394-1952. Cut-your-own and pre-cut trees, plus evergreen roping, according to its Ohio Christmas Tree Association listing.
  • Windy Hill Tree Farm, East Liverpool: 2435 Fisher Road, 330-386-3917. A choose-and-cut farm in southern Columbiana County with nine kinds of trees, from Canaan and Fraser fir to Serbian spruce and Austrian pine. You can bring your own saw or borrow one of theirs.

Tips for a good day at the tree farm

  • Go early. Opening weekend and the first week of December have the best pick, especially for tall trees. Weekday afternoons are the quietest.
  • Measure first. Take your ceiling height and subtract the stand and the topper. Trees look smaller in an open field than in your living room, so bring a tape measure.
  • Know your stand. Check how thick a trunk it takes. If yours uses a pin, ask the farm to drill the trunk.
  • Dress for mud. Boots, gloves and layers. The fields are uneven and a saw handle gets cold fast.
  • Bring straps and an old blanket. Your own straps hold better than twine, and the blanket keeps sap off the roof. Trunk faces forward.
  • Have cash on you. Pauley's is cash or check only, and a couple of farms add a fee on cards.

How to keep your tree fresh

This is straight from the Ohio Christmas Tree Association and the farms:

  • Cut about half an inch off the bottom of the trunk right before it goes in the stand. Cut straight across, not at an angle or in a V, and don't whittle the sides down to fit the stand.
  • Get it in water within 6 to 8 hours of that cut. Use a stand that holds about a quart of water for every inch of trunk width.
  • Check the water every day. A fresh tree drinks a lot the first few days, and the trunk can dry out even with some water left in the stand.
  • Keep it away from fireplaces, heaters, vents and direct sun, and turn the lights off when you go to bed or leave the house.
